The future of Australia’s internet is in the hands of a few large ISPs, but the company that makes it has its own vision for the future.
And it has no plans to be “bigger than Google”.
“We’re a smaller ISP and we have a different approach to the NBN and the internet than Google, which has always been an important part of our strategy,” NBN Co chief executive officer Stephen Conroy told the ABC’s AM program on Thursday.
“We are a very independent organisation with a lot of different visions for the NBN, but what we’re focused on is what we do best, which is delivering high quality broadband to our customers.”
Conroy said the company was looking to expand the rollout of its own NBN and was working with local ISPs to ensure they could deliver a high-quality service.
“When you look at the way the NBN is run and the way our competitors are run, it’s really hard to find a company that has a very strong network, particularly in the urban areas,” he said.
“I think we’re in a very exciting time with this NBN and we’re going to be in the market for many more years to come.”NBN Co is a telecommunications company, and Conroy said NBN Co was focused on delivering high-speed internet in the rural areas.”NBN’s focus is on delivering the best NBN service in a competitive market, and that’s really what our approach is,” he told AM.
“We’ve got the best network, we’ve got great network management and we’ve been able to scale to meet demand.”‘
No one’s going to beat us’Conroy told AM the NBN Co had been investing in its own network.
“In the past, we have had a focus on fibre-to-the-node, but we have also had a very focused focus on the NBN.
It’s the NBN that we’re building, and we don’t compete with anybody,” he explained.”
Our competitors don’t have that.
We’re the NBN.”
Nuclear power has been the dominant provider of high-end broadband in Australia for decades, but Conroy argued that the current technology was no longer viable.
“It’s a really expensive technology to operate and it’s been over 20 years since the NBN was built, so it’s very hard to scale up,” he argued.
“There are many challenges out there, but that’s one of the reasons we’re investing in fibre-coaxial technology.”
The National Broadband Network is currently the biggest network in the world, with more than 20 million premises being served.
NBN Co has been building the network since 2008.
